How-to, Municipal, Compilation
A review of wise policies and practices from Ontario municipalities to support contributions to Canada’s 30x30 target

About

This report demonstrates how municipalities can contribute to Canada’s commitment to protect and conserve 30% of lands and waters by 2030 (the 30×30 target) using examples of wise policies and practices from Ontario municipalities that have already successfully contributed to the target.

Despite its provincial scope, municipalities across Canada can use the report to support protected and conserved area contributions.

The Municipal Contributions to Canada’s Protected Areas Target: A Review of Wise Practices in Ontario aims to support municipal contributions to Canada’s target to protect and conserve 30% of lands and waters by 2030 (the 30×30 target). It features examples of policies and practices from municipalities in Ontario that have successfully contributed to the target. In doing so, the report aims to provide other municipalities within Ontario, and elsewhere in Canada, with the information they need to determine if they own and manage lands that could meet the criteria to contribute. Where municipalities may not already meet the criteria, examples from the report could be used to update and strengthen their approach to protecting and conserving natural areas in their jurisdiction.

We believe in the major opportunity for municipalities to showcase their conservation efforts on a national platform. This is where biodiversity can be protected, where conservation lands can be connected, and Canadians can gain an appreciation for their local natural wonders.
